The present castle
overlooking the River Loire with majesty is now so far different from the
one built in the Middle Ages. As a matter of fact, Louis XI entirely
destroyed the castle by setting fire. Chaumont was only rebuilt in the
late 15th century. Though looking like a fortress, the castle is
spectacularly sited: overlooking the River Loire, lying at the heart of
peaceful parkland and delightful gardens.
Catherine de Medici owned the castle in
1560. Then, she passed it to her rival, Diane de Poitiers, in exchange of
Chenonceau Castle. Madame de Staël stayed in Chaumont Castle in 1810.
